![]() It's all a matter of your taste, but the Dragon Quest series has very traditional RPG gameplay, and as such isn't suitable for everyone. Sadly none of them were released on the SNES in English, but they released 5 and 6 on the DS recently, and there are fan translations online for the SNES versions. ![]() If that's what you want then play DQ4 (which didn't come out on the SNES-your choices are NES or DS), DQ5 or DQ6 (both of which have fan translations, or you can play them on the DS) DQ3, on the other hand, more than holds up to any other 8-bit JRPG (including the vaunted FF3), and the SNES version is easily one of the most technically impressive and outright beautiful games on the console, but bear in mind that it's still a "roll up your own characters" thing like FF1, not a typical story-heavy JRPG. ![]() DQ4 and every game afterwards is a standalone story with some recurring thematic elements, just like FF (the first five FF games except FF2 all have elemental crystals DQ4-DQ6 all have a castle in the sky)ĭQ1 and DQ2 are both older than FF1 and correspondingly primitive. ![]() You'll appreciate the endgame of DQ3 more (and have an advantage solving some puzzles) if you've played DQ1, but that's about it. The first three DQ games theoretically form a connected trilogy but they're not story-heavy enough for it to matter much.
